March 22, 2007 -- We've returned to Gainesville from our trip, which was quite an unforgettable experience! In our week in the Dominican Republic, we provided over 1,800 patients with medical care, surgical care, and public health education. Over 180,000 antibiotics, anti-parasitics, multivitamins, pain relievers and other medications were provided to these patients. Over 1,000 toys and toothbrushes were given to children. However, the breadth of our experience cannot be captured with these numbers. We feel truly gifted to have learned something special from each interaction that we encountered in our short time. These experiences will undoubtedly benefit us all greatly in our future medical careers as well as participation in international medicine. Check back as we update the website with some of our stories and photos!
March 6, 2007 -- The Walgreens Corporation has been overwhelmingly generous to the College of Medicine. Walgreens has donated 2 semi-trucks full of medications for medical students to take to Yucatan, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador for their spring break trips.
March 5, 2007 -- This has been a very exciting week for us. We had the privilege today of hosting Dr. Darin Portnoy, the president of international aid organization Doctors Without Borders. The event was organized by Heidi Nagel, a second year medical student at UF COM. All medical students were invited to hear Dr. Portney's unique perspective and deep insight on incorporating international medical aid into a medical career.
